This was a very crazy month as I know it is for many parents. Fortunately, I was able to squeeze in listening to a few audiobooks and enjoyed most of them…
1. All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot read by Christopher Timothy
I loved this audiobook. It is even better than the wonderful PBS Masterpiece series. I liked how the characters came to life even more in the book. The way that Herriot starts and ends each chapter is masterful. He is an amazing writer.
2. 1776 by David McCullough- is a fantastic book about the Revolutionary War in the year 1776. It was so good that I wish it had covered the entire war. I am in awe that America’s rag-tag green army gained ground when so much was stacked against them. Washington is a hero of mine for being humble, disciplined, faithful, and selfless. A lesser man could not have accomplished what he did.
3. John Adams by David McCullough– I am almost finished with this 30-hour unabridged audiobook and truly am in awe at everything John Adams and Abigail Adams did for the independence of America. He is another hero. In regards to this book and 1776, I believe that God sent giants of men to earth to accomplish one of His greatest miracles: the creation of a free country led by the people for the people.
4. The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn- Lieutenant Mila Pavlichenko was a Russian female sniper who shot and killed 309 Hitlerites. While the author convinces us that her kill number is much higher, 309 is still an amazing feat. It was interesting to learn about life as a female Russian soldier during WWII. Unlike many other countries, Russia allowed females to join up and fight. Russia had some very brave and talented women in their ranks. I really liked this book.
5. Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson– I loved this book, it was very entertaining, funny, whimsical, and unique. It’s Sanderson at his finest. I’d highly recommend it.
6. The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate– This was a good book about the history of how freed slaves searched for their lost family members who had been sold. While a very sad topic, I loved the main character, Hannie. Hannie’s personality and grit were fun to read and she kept me laughing. Bendette, a teacher who taught about this subject years later was not my favorite. I thought her story was forced, a bit unbelievable, and that her personality was cliché. She could have been cut out completely. Had Hannie’s story been the only story, I would have enjoyed the book more.
7. Elantris by Brandon Sanderson– It is fun to go back and read one of Sanderson’s first books. Elantris was great and he has only gotten better. While the book was entertaining I felt it lacked Sanderson’s typical humor, well-developed dimensional characters, and flow. It is still an entertaining read though.
8. Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens– Is a great classic. I listened to a dramatized version; it was well-acted and kept me entertained. However, if this is your first read of Oliver Twist, I think the written or non-dramatized audio version would be better for comprehension of Oliver’s story.
9. Inside the Criminal Mind by Stanton Samenow– This is a well-researched no-nonsense book about criminals. It details behaviors, thinking patterns, and signs that indicate someone has a criminal mentality.
10 and 11. Words of Mormon and Mosiah in The Book of Mormon. These are great books in my favorite book of all time, The Book of Mormon. In the Words of Mormon and Mosiah I have learned so much.
