13 Audiobooks I Listened to September 2024

This month was hectic, so I could only listen to 13 audiobooks, most of which were good.

1- From the Wizarding Archive by J.K. Rowling and Evanna Lynch- This is the latest from J.K. Rowling and adds more history to the Wizarding world of Harry Potter which I really enjoyed.

2—Frankenstein by Mary Shelley—This is a classic that I had never read. It was okay, but I won’t reread it. I couldn’t get over how Frankenstein was supposed to be an uncommonly intelligent man. Yet, besides making his Frankenstein monster, most of his other actions lacked intelligence and foresight to an alarming degree.

3—One Child by Mei Fong—The Chinese One Child Policy was utterly disgusting in its implementation and had a devastating ripple effect on the Chinese citizens My heart goes out to those citizens who experienced horrific atrocities due to this policy. In 2015 it moved to a 2 child policy, and in 2021 it adopted a 3 child policy however, these policy standards haven’t had as much success. The ripple effect from this barbaric one child policy is still in force. China’s population dropped by two million in 2023. The author did an excellent job writing about it and covering the policy from multiple angles, including how much easier it was for the country to turn off fertility rather than to turn it back on; the Chinese government has realized the error of its ways.

4- Your Brain is Always Listening by Daniel G. Amen- Great advice on how to have a healthy brain.

5- The Unwedding by Ally Condie- A reasonably good murder mystery. It moves along at a pretty good pace. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was entertaining.

6- The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray- A historical romance that uses Jane Austen’s characters in future murder mysteries. It was entertaining and well-written.

7- The Late Mrs. Willoughby by Claudia Gray- A historical romance that uses Jane Austen’s characters in future murder mysteries. It was entertaining and well-written.

8- The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh by Claudia Gray- A historical romance that uses Jane Austen’s characters in future murder mysteries. It was entertaining and well-written.

9- 1984 by George Orwell—I did not read the reviews on this one. I wasn’t aware of the not-so-great scenes, etc. The message/warning about socialism is good, but the book gets rather graphic which I didn’t like.

10- The End of Mental Illness by Daniel G. Amen- A great book about the health of the human brain. I’d recommend reading at least one of Daniel G. Amen’s books to everyone. He has a very enlightening viewpoint on mental illness and health.

11- Unchain Your Brain by Daniel G. Amen, David E. Smith- Great advice on how to have a healthy brain. However, it can be daunting listening to Daniel’s books. I listened to three of them this month, and I felt overwhelmed with all the changes he suggested for brain health. I do like that he mentions starting with just one change, though.

12- The Course of Human Events by David McCullough- A short discourse on how impressive yet imperfect many incredible men who have affected the history of America were.

13- A Distance Too Grand by Regina Scott- A historical romance about a woman photographer and a Captain on a survey trip in Arizona. They were an intrepid party and ran into many troubles but managed to get through them. It was a clean romance and an easy listen.

I hope you enjoy listening to these audiobooks as much as I did. Click here for more of my Audiobook recommendations.
