Every Christmas my kids and I make sugar cookies for friends, family, and Santa.
We make them using this Best Chewy Sugar Cookie Recipe and this Best Vanilla Buttercream Icing Recipe.
It was extra special in 2024 as my daughter’s friends (not pictured) joined in the fun.
The supplies you will need to make buttercream frosted sugar cookies—besides the ingredients and supplies for both the cookie and icing recipes are,
Christmas cookie cutters, small bowls and food coloring to mix different colors of icing, multiple zip loc bags to pipe, and sprinkles.
While it is kind of a “given” to make sugar cookies for Santa, I wanted to post this because these days a lot of people are using sugar cookie design icing that is made of corn syrup and confectioner’s syrup and dries hard and flavorless because it makes pretty cookies.
While sugar cookie decorative icing bleeds/fills and can make gorgeous designs, the cookies do not taste good. it is possible to make pretty and great tasting sugar cookies.
I’ve made Peter Rabbit buttercream sugar cookies as well for a family Easter party that not only were pretty but were soft and chewy and tasted great.
I’ve tried a few different recipes (even the condensed milk icing) and while they come out pretty, after one bite (if its not spit out) no one wants to eat them.
Using buttercream can be beautiful but most importantly people will want to eat them.
I took a few plates to two different Christmas parties in 2024 and they were all complimented and eaten up.
Kids have a great time piping the icing too! Their little hands can do piping, it is extremely difficult for them to do the delicate designs and filling of the sugar cookie icing.
So, if you make sugar cookies this Christmas, try using a buttercream for icing.
Kids will love making and eating them.
Most adults will too.
