Valentine’s Day Slime

Valentine's Day Slime

Making slime is a great craft or activity for kids for Valentine’s Day.

My daughter is a “slime-making pro”. She has made many, many batches of slime.

Valentine's Day Slime

She often asks me to make it with her so I have had quite a bit of experience with slime-making as well.

Since we’ve had lots of practice, my daughter and I share many tips for making what she calls water slime aka jiggly slime.

If you follow our tips you cannot fail. This said I’d highly recommend watching the video on this page before making this type of slime.

Watching the video will help you to see the consistency and texture better than you could visualize it by reading the directions below.

Supply List and Cost for this Valentine’s Day Slime

measuring spoons and cups

paper bowls

plastic spoons

Borax

Amazon Basics or Elmer’s white school glue. You can use clear glue too, we use clear glue a lot as well. Since we were making white slime we opted for the white school glue for this batch.

water

Optional gel food coloring

Optional (glitter)

Optional (hand/body lotion)

Optional (food scale) to measure 4.25 oz of glue or use 1/2 Cup, measuring with a food scale is less messy.

How to Make this Valentine’s Day Slime

Continue reading and/or I highly recommend watching the video on this page. It shows you the consistency better than I could explain it.

1- Pour 1 Cup hot water into a paper bowl and stir 1/2 teaspoon of Borax into the water until well mixed.

2- Pour 1/2 Cup or 4.25 oz of white school glue into paper bowls. You can make multiple batches. I think the activator amount will make 6 bowls of slime.

3- Stir in food coloring (gel works best). Mix the food color in before adding the activator (Borax + water = activator).

4- Stir in 1 teaspoon of activator into each bowl at a time. Stirring in between each addition of the activator for a minute or two. Once the glue starts to pull off the wall of the bowl as you stir start adding the activator in 1/2 teaspoon increments. Once the slime will pull up into the air in a long strand with the spoon, take off any rings you may have on and then pull the glue out of the bowl.

5- Using your hands, pull and twist the slime (at this point it will continue activating so give it a few minutes of pulling and twisting, and if you are going to add lotion, add lotion before adding more activator).

6- Add a little bit of lotion, this is optional but it will make the slime smell good and feel softer.

7- Once you have pulled and twisted the slime for a few minutes if it is very difficult to remove from your hands (i.e. too sticky), add 1/4 teaspoon of activator and pull and twist for another few minutes. If it is still too sticky to remove from your hands add another 1/4 teaspoon of activator. Once you can get the slime off of your hands without too much effort and it is still very stretchy it is done.

Note- It is much better to have stickier slime than over-activated slime. Trust us, we have tossed so much glue/slime that was unworkable because we’ve over-activated it.

Add the activator slowly and give the slime a few minutes in between each addition to reach the consistency it will with that amount of activator.

4 Tips to Remedy Over-Activated Slime

Again, it’s better to leave it a little sticker than add that last activator addition and have it become over-activated. However, if you have over-activated it there are a few things you can do to remedy slime…maybe. If it is highly over-activated you’ll need to toss it. If there is still stretch in it, you can do the following to make it better slime.

1- Add heat. Put it in a microwave-safe bowl and warm it for 10 seconds until it gets stretchy again. Alternatively, you can leave it in the sunshine in hot weather outside and it will soften.

2- Add hot water, you can add water to the slime and this will help a little but not much.

3- Add aloe vera. This is a new ingredient my daughter discovered to remedy over-activated slime and so far it has worked great to soften and make it stretchy.

4- Make another batch of slime and make it so that it is extremely under-activated (i.e. barely starting to pull together), then add the over-activated slime with it and twist, pull, and kneed them together.
