These DIY Wood Block Hearts make great Valentine’s Day decorations.
They were inexpensive and only cost about $5.00 for all six (we did have all the tools needed for the project so that kept costs down). They were pretty quick to make as well. We made six of them in about a half an hour.
The pink, red, white, and natural DIY wood block hearts were a great addition to my chabby chic Valentine’s Day Mantel I decorated this year.
These are great Valentine’s Day decorations and could be a fun family activity to make.
The free printables download for these hearts are in the supply list.
Size 1 heart is 8″ across (the widest area of the heart). Size 2 is 6 1/2″ wide. Size 3 is 5″ wide. Size 4 is 3 3/4″ wide.

Pencil to mark the wood
How to Make DIY Wood Block Hearts
- Secure a piece of a 2×8 piece of wood on a saw table with a portion of wood hanging over the edge of the saw table where you will cut. We needed about 4′ length of a 2x8x10 for 6 hearts.
- If desired, download these free heart printables and choose your preferred sizes of hearts. Download size 1 heart here. Download Sizes 2, 3, and 4 here. Cut the hearts out and trace the hearts on the 2×8.
- Use a jigsaw with at least a 2.5″ blade to cut out the hearts.
- Use a piece of sandpaper or a hand sander and smooth the front and edges. I liked the look of rounding the edges so I rounded them all.
- Next wipe off the dust.
- Pick paint colors. If needed use a spare piece of wood to test different colors of paint.
- Paint the hearts going in the same direction as the grain on the front of the heart. Add an additional coat or two if needed.
- Allow to dry and you are done! Optional- Sand edges to distress the hearts.
I left two hearts unpainted to match the natural wood beaded garland I hung across the mantel.
Although these are not without imperfection, I love the look of them. I could have sanded them longer if I wanted them perfect, but since I was doing a shabby chic style mantel I knew I didn’t need them to look crisp and clean. I could have also sanded the final product to make them more vintage and distressed looking but ultimately decided not to.
