German Rote Grütze Recipe (Made Without Red Currants) is a German fruit pudding topped with Sweet Vanilla Cream.

Yummy German Rote Grütze Recipe

I lived near Hamburg Germany (Northwest Germany) for almost a year. During this time, I often had the opportunity to eat authentic German food in the homes of German friends and acquaintances.

One of the staple desserts that was served in northern Germany usually after a hearty German meal was Hamburger German Rote Grütze.

The best German Rote Grütze Recipe

It is a light fruit pudding dessert topped with a sweet vanilla cream sauce. It tastes delicious!

The traditional German recipe calls for red currants. Red currants are much easier to find in Germany than they are in the United States.

So, if you want to make this delicious fruit pudding in the United States, you can simply swap out the red currants with one 14.5 oz can of red tart cherries.

Even with the substitution of the tart cherries for red currants, this Rote Grütze recipe tastes very authentic to the recipe with red currants! It tastes almost exactly like what I had many times while living in northern Germany. German Rote Grütze Dessert Recipe

It was easily one of my top favorite German desserts I tried while living there.

I served it at a German book club evening night.

I portioned the dessert into small serving cups so that the recipe I had would serve all 20 guests. I got many compliments on it. Delicious dessert - German Rote Grütze Recipe
