My daughter loves Sky and Paw patrol so I made her a Paw Patrol Sky Cotton Candy Explosion Birthday Cake (Homemade).

She turned 3 recently and we had her Paw Patrol Party last weekend.

You can see what we used for the party decorations and food, and what we did for the activities and treat bags here.

I apologize for the photographs. I should have taken more photos on my tripod (or a video like I often do).

Also, the lighting was strange. When I do parties sometimes I am in such a hurry to get things done, that I don’t get the best photography and videography.

I hope by explaining with the few photos I have, you can see how I made this cake.

Ingredients for Paw Patrol Sky Cotton Candy Explosion Birthday Cake (Homemade)

2 cake mixes of your choice and the required ingredients to mix them together. I used 1 white and 1 funfetti mix.

Ingredients for this Cotton candy frosting recipe

1/2 C jam or jelly. I used black raspberry freezer jam. I also really like using Bonne Maman preserves.

1 TBSP cotton candy flavoring (part of recipe)

2 TBSP of each: sprinkles, mini mallows, round candies (had) Alternatively, you can purchase this cotton candy crunch and add this… I wish I had used it.

1 package of cotton candy (2 oz or more)

pink and white sprinkles (had)

edible white shimmer spray (had)

pink food coloring-I find gel food coloring makes the best colors

Supply List for Paw Patrol Sky Cotton Candy Explosion Birthday Cake (Homemade)

Kitchen Aid mixer

parchment paper or nonstick cooking spray + flour

2- 9″ cake pans—I like using springform cake pans for layered cake but any type of 9″ cake pan will work.

2- 5″ cake pans sprayed and floured (had)

spatula

cake leveler- if you want precise layers (I did not worry about leveling for this cake because all four came out fairly even, for a cake like this one or if the cakes were obviously uneven, I would use a leveler)

cooling racks

cake stand

piping bags or large gallon Ziploc bags

Small bowls and spoons for dividing icing

Small rounded icing spatula or butter knife

pie spatula or long straight icing spatula (for scraping the edge of the cake).

candles for a birthday party

Sky figurine with an airplane sitting on seran wrap (had)

Long pink Candles (had)

circle-shaped cut-out (alternatively you can use a straight glass or just hand cut a center out with a knife) (had)

Icing tip (closed star tip)

I had every supply and ingredient I needed on-hand.  Because of this, the cake probably cost me $5.00-$7.00 worth of supplies and food.

Directions on how to make this Paw Patrol Sky Cotton Candy Explosion Birthday Cake (Homemade)

1- Spray each of the four pans with cooking spray and coat evenly with flour.

2- Mix 2 cake mixes up according to the box directions. Divide the first cake mix between the 2- 9″ cake pans and the second divide evenly between 2- 5″ cake pans do not overfill—fill up to 3/4 full. There will be an extra cake mix from the second batch. I used the additional cake mix to make 24 mini cupcakes. You could use the extra to make the 9″ cakes bigger if it is the same flavor and brand of cake mix and if so desired. Tap the cake pans on the counter a few times to get rid of any air pockets before baking.

3- Bake the cakes until a toothpick comes out clean or as box instructions indicate.

4- Allow the cakes to completely cool (about an hour or more).

5- Make this cotton candy frosting recipe

6- Carefully scrape the edges of the pans and turn the cakes out onto the cooling racks. Allow time for the cakes to cool more if they are not fully cooled.

7- Get your cake stand and using some buttercream frosting stick the bottom layer onto the center of the stand. Cut out the center of this cake layer (about 2.5″ in diameter). Ice this first layer of cake with buttercream then add jelly or jam on top.

8- Add the next cake on top, cutting out a center to match the previous one. Add a little icing just outside the hole so that the 5″ cake will stick to the second layer of cake.

I stuffed the cake before and after adding layer 3. But you can wait until layer 3 is on…whatever is your preference.

9-Cut out the circle in this cake layer as well. Add icing and jelly or jam on top of the icing.

10- Stuff the inside of the cake with the sprinkles, candy, mini mallows, and cotton candy.

I found this Cotton Candy Sweet Treasures at a store a while back on clearance for like .10 cents so I grabbed a few. It’s been sitting in my candy tote and was the perfect addition to this cake… although any cotton candy, marshmallows, candy, or cotton candy crunch would work.

11- Add the top layer to the cake. DO NOT cut a hole in the top layer.

12- Using your crumb coat the cake. I do this by putting 1/3 of the frosting in a microwave-safe bowl microwaving it for 30-50 seconds and stirring well. This softens the frosting without having to change the recipe.

13- Refrigerate the cake for at least 45 minutes so the crumb coat can harden.

14- Separate 1/2 of the buttercream frosting and leave it white.

15- Add pink food gel/coloring to the other 1/2 and mix until thoroughly pink.

16- Coat the cake with mostly white icing and put dollops of pink icing here and there.

17- Then, using an Icing spatula, blend the mostly white and pink dollops together, creating a pink cloud type of look. Paw Patrol Sky Cotton Candy Explosion Birthday Cake (Homemade)

18- Pipe the pink icing as stars/star-flowers in pink around the top, bottom, and middle edges of the cake.

19- Sprinkle the cake with pink sugar sprinkles. You can make your own pink sugar if you want.

20- Spray the cake with edible white shimmer spray.

21- Place saran wrap underneath Sky’s airplane and set it on the top of the cake.

22- Refrigerate the cake for 30 minutes to allow everything to set.

23- When blowing out candles, I found using long ones that are positioned out and away from Sky looked cool and were also functional.

Note- When you cut into this cake, as long as you do so within a few hours of stuffing it with cotton candy, it should still be fluffy.

The cotton candy did absorb some of the moisture from the cake but I liked the effect and how it stuck to the roof and sides of the hole inside the cake.

I am glad I added sprinkles and candy, mallows, as well as cotton candy because they all added a different dimension when you cut into the cake.

I just really wished I knew about the cotton candy crunch. I would have purchased some of that to add in as well.

Although it is pretty sweet, the cake is absolutely delicious!  It would feed over 24 when cut into slender slices because a little goes a long way with how sweet it is.

Everyone really liked it, and if you try it, I hope you do too.

  • 1 TBSP cotton candy flavoring (for recipe)
  • 2 TBSP of each: sprinkles, mini mallows, round candies (had)
  • 1 package of cotton candy (2 oz or more)
  • Sky figurine with an airplane sitting on seran wrap (had)
  • pink sprinkles (had)
  • edible white shimmer spray (had)

Instructions

1- Spray each of the four pans with cooking spray and coat evenly with flour.

2- Mix 2 cake mixes up. Divide the first between the 2- 9" cake pans and the second divide evenly between the 5" cake pans do not overfill. Fill up to 3/4 full. Tap the cake pans on the counter a few times to get rid of any air pockets.

3- Bake the cakes until a toothpick comes out clean or as box instructions indicate.

4- Allow the cakes to completely cool (about an hour or more).

5- Make this buttercream icing recipe. You'll need this full buttercream recipe. YOU WILL MAKE THE FOLLOWING CHANGES:  #1- You'll need the entire recipe for this cake. You'll separate about 1/4 of it off and add about 1/2 C of milk to make the crumb coat portion of the icing. You will want to remove 3/4th of the buttercream and mix the milk in to make the crumb coat immediately after mixing the main recipe so it doesn't clump or split. #2- You will NOT add vanilla or vanilla bean to this recipe, instead you will add 1 1/2-2 Tablespoons of Cotton Candy flavoring--to taste.

6- Carefully scrape the edges of the pans and turn the cakes out onto the cooling racks. Allow time for the cakes to cool more if they are not fully cooled.

7- Get your cake stand and using some buttercream frosting stick the bottom layer onto the center of the stand. Cut out the center of this cake layer (about 2.5" in diameter). Ice this first layer of cake with buttercream then add jelly or jam on top.

9-Cut out the circle in this cake layer as well. Add icing and jelly or jam on top of the icing.

10- Stuff the inside of the cake with the sprinkles, candy, mini mallows, and cotton candy.

11- Add the top layer to the cake. DO NOT cut a hole in the top layer.

12- Using your crumb coat (~1/4 of the buttercream recipe + 1/2 C milk mixed in the mixer) and coat the cake. Refrigerate the cake for at least 45 minutes so the crumb coat can harden.

13- Separate 1/2 of the buttercream frosting and leave it white.

14- Add pink food gel/coloring to the other 1/2 and mix until thoroughly pink.

15- Coat the cake with mostly white icing and put dollops of pink icing here and there.

18- Sprinkle the cake with pink sugar sprinkles. You can make your own pink sugar if you want.

19- Spray the cake with edible white shimmer spray.

20- Place saran wrap underneath Sky and set it on the top of the cake.

21- Refrigerate the cake for 30 minutes to allow everything to set.
