Audiobooks I Listened to in June 2023.

I like to list the audiobooks I listen to each month so that I can keep track of them. Hopefully, I’ll share some good ones with those readers who are interested.

These are the audiobooks that I listened to this June of 2023. The titles in bold are the ones I recommend.

  1. Quidditch Through the Ages by J.K. Rowling

This was such a fun book. I had no idea how much I’d love it when I started to listen to it, but it was just so good.

The audio version is so much fun and has excellent sound effects that keep one very entertained.

It had me laughing out loud during the quidditch match at the end. The match at the end gives you a glimpse into the world of Harry Potter and Dumbledore’s army years after the Hogwarts Battle. I actually listened to a lot of the Quidditch match twice.

I want to listen as I read along in the book as I think the illustrations are probably pretty good. I think reading and listening together would be the best experience.

  1. The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling

I also loved this audiobook! This book has a lot of Potterworld folklore and stories. I listened to some of this audiobook twice as well.

I want to listen as I read along in the book as I think the illustrations are probably pretty good. I think reading and listening together would be the best experience for this book as well.

  1. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K Rowling

Why can’t all authors be as talented and ingenious as J.K. Rowling?

Seriously, I am so impressed by the history and complexity of the wizarding world that Rowling has created.

I loved this audiobook. It had amazing sound effects and Newt Scamander’s reading was awesome as well.

I also want to listen and read along in the future as I believe seeing the illustrations while listening to the sound effects would make it even better.

  1. Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

When I started reading this book I had no idea it was sci-fi. It was interesting and pretty good, but as many reviewers said, it felt very fragmented, not fully developed, and a bit incohesive. It was on the precipice of becoming a great book but it fell short for me.

That said, it may be worth a listen to for entertainment purposes—especially if you are into sci-fi/time travel stories.

  1. The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck

In my opinion, the Good Earth is a parable of how acting selfishly will not bring peace, true love, and strong family ties.

When I read reviews of this book, I was super surprised that it is recommended or required reading for High Schoolers. I would not let my teen read this.

I get that no one is perfect, but almost every character in the story is an immoral coward. The main characters kill an infant, drug their family members instead of standing up to them, steal a fortune from an unprotected family who helped keep them alive when they were starving, contemplate selling their kin, enslave others, and in turn, allow themselves to be controlled by gang members, and are unfaithful and merciless to women— the main character is so selfish he eventually becomes a 70 + year old pedophile; he mentions sleeping with a young girl who his son wanted to marry and how he views her as his daughter and she snuggles up to him like he is her father… really (?!?) we want our teens reading this stuff?

Wang Lung’s life and his family members are great examples of how not to act if you want peace and happiness in life. I just don’t get why having teens read this would be educational at all.

I will say that as an adult reading it, it was interesting due to its Chinese perspective and it is a great parable of what not do to if you want peace and happiness for yourself and your family.

  1. Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child by John Gottman, Ph.D

This is a scientifically based guide on how to raise good, emotionally mature children. It was so good, I listened to it twice this month. I’d highly recommend it if you have kids!

  1. Devil’s Delight by M.C. Beaton’s ghostwriter. This is a continuation of the Agatha Raisin Series written by MC Beaton. It is written by a different author since sadly, MC Beaton has departed this world. She choose a great writer to keep the series going and this was a fun murder mystery with some real laugh-out-loud moments! I’m excited to see where this new author takes the series. I hope Agatha really is moving on from James.
  2. A Mind of Her Own by Paula McLain is a story about Madame Curie. It was good, short but good. I wish the author had written more about her life and accomplishments.
  3. Chariots to Jordan by E. James Harrison is a historical fiction novel about the Biblical maid who encouraged Naaman to seek out the Prophet Elisha. I enjoyed it. I thought the story was good and things moved along. The ending could have been more comprehensive and/or detailed but overall it was a good read.
