My mom has been making this 7 UP Grilled Chicken Recipe for years. It’s a definite family favorite. Somehow I forgot about this gem of a recipe. Just last month we went to my parents for a big family dinner. My mom and dad had made and grilled 7 UP chicken and I couldn’t believe I had forgotten about it!
So, I decided I MUST start making this easy, delicious, tender, and juicy chicken dish for us… Truthfully, I really can’t believe I forgot about it in the first place because it’s one of my favorites too.
Note: Don’t make this recipe if you don’t have a grill! I tried making it indoors on this top-of-the-line grill pan but the marinate dripped onto the bottom of the pan and smoked up my house like crazy. Further, the marinate burned on the pan and gave the chicken a smokey 7 UP flavor which I didn’t love. So unless you love smokey 7UP flavor, I’d recommend sticking to an outdoor grill.
Serves: 6
Prep Time: 5 Minutes
Marinate Time: 10+ Hours
Grill Time: 15 Minutes (varies)
You’ll want to marinate the chicken for at least 10 hours. I like to marinate it overnight and throughout the day and then grill it right before dinner.
Directions
1. Mix the 7UP, Soy Sauce, Oil and Garlic Powder in a deep dish (I use a casserole dish). Place the chicken into the marinade making sure the chicken is covered. The dish should be big enough yet small enough for the chicken to be almost all (if not all) of the way submerged in the marinade.
2. Marinate in the fridge for 10+ hours.
3. Before serving, grill the chicken until the meat is white all the way through.
4. Enjoy!
Ingredients
2 Cups 7 UP
1 Cup Soy Sauce
1 Cup Oil
2 teaspoons Garlic Powder
4-6 Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts

This recipe is almost the same as the Famous Sanpete BBQ Turkey recipe. Turkey or chicken, it is delicious!
Amy- Cool! I didn’t know you could use this with turkey. I’ll have to give it a try. Thanks!
how did you do this with turkey, did you se turkey parts;legs, wings, etc
I didn’t do it with turkey although another commenter said she has. Good luck!
What kind of oil do you use for this recipe?
Vegetable oil it typically used. Good question!
Question for you, have you ever tried using diet 7up?
Kim- I personally love diet 7UP but I haven’t tried it with this recipe. The taste of regular and diet 7up are slightly different but not enough that it would make a huge difference in taste. That said, I’m not a chemist. Perhaps the lack of sugar and presence of artificial sugars may make a difference in how the 7up reacts and is absorbed by the other ingredients in this recipe but I would doubt it. I’d say give it a try though and let us know how it goes!
Diet 7 up works just the same, no difference. My recipe also has 3 T. lemon juice. very good !!
Thanks for letting me know, that’s wonderful!
Have you tried recipe with dark chicken also?
No I haven’t but I bet it would still taste really great!
