Hot Cocoa in a Jar Recipe
If you want to make a dry hot cocoa mix to put into a jar this recipe has been tried, tested, and approved.
My kids, many of their friends, and I, myself all love it.
I was actually surprised that so many kids who have tried it like it so much because it is not as sweet as many store-bought hot cocoa mixes.
I prefer it not-as-sweet especially because I love adding marshmallows and marshmallows automatically kick up the sweet meter.
However, you can substitute some milk chocolate chips or semi-sweet chips instead of the dark/bitter-sweet chips this recipe calls for if you want to make the hot cocoa a little sweeter.
I’d recommend trying it as written first and then going from there.

Ingredients for this Hot Cocoa in a Jar Recipe
Dry Hot Cocoa Mix This makes two 16 oz Mason jars about 3/4 full or 268g per jar.
If you pack the jars with some Hershey’s peppermints as I did in this peppermint hot cocoa in a jar here, you could likely fill 3 Mason Jars about 1/2 way full with this recipe.
1 1/4 C unsweetened cocoa powder or for more precise measurements 50g unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 bag of 10 oz bag of dark chocolate chips 60% cocoa bittersweet or weigh out 117g for more precise measurement
2 packages of chocolate instant pudding mix (3.9oz)
1/2 C packed or 100g dark brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons or 8g salt
Optional Toppings
Add a layer of a few spoonfuls of milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips or 35g chocolate chips
Fill the rest of the jar up with mini marshmallows or 30g mini marshmallows
Add a candy cane to the outside of the jar.

How to Make this Dry Mix Hot Cocoa in a Jar Recipe
Watch the video tutorial, continue reading, and/or print off the recipe below.
1- Decorate the jar with ribbon before beginning if desired. I used Ribbon, hot glue, and a popsicle stick to press it down and prevent it from getting burned.
2- Add all of the ingredients into a bowl and stir them together well.
3- Divide this mix into two 16 oz Mason jars and fill about 3/4 full.
4- Optional- Use a paper towel to clean up the rim of the glass jar on the inside and then add a few spoonfuls of chocolate chips (milk or semi-sweet)
5- Add marshmallows.
6- Pull the saran wrap taut on the top so that it is clear. Press against the outer rim of the jar to stick it.
7- Tie the ribbon around the rim of the jar.
8- Holding the saran wrap gently rip the excess off. See the video if this is unclear.
9- Attach a candy cane.
10- Print off the printable and attach that as well. I like to use a cute clothespin as I did for this peppermint hot cocoa jar.
